Ryan's Daughter 4 stars (excellent)
"Ryan's Daughter" is a love story that turns into a love triangle in the epic splendor of an isolated village in the picturesque Dingle Peninsula of Ireland. Like all love triangles, it ends with a disaster that becomes a tragedy.
Rosy Ryan (Sarah Miles) is trying to find that little something missing in his life and thinks she is when she announces her love for her former schoolteacher, Charles Shaughnessy (Robert Mitchum), who is old enough to be her father.
Unfortunately for Rosy, her marriage brought him the love but not passion. It is the passion she finds when she meets and falls instantly in the arms of Major Randolph Doryan (Christopher Jones), a young British officer assigned to the village.
Major Doryan is a hero of the First World War is found in the village as part of the British occupation while the war continues in Europe. Villagers returned the British presence and jump on an opportunity to fight for their freedom.
Tim O'Leary (Barry Foster) leads a resistance force that awaits the arrival of German weapons so they can finally arm and defend itself against the British takeover.
The villagers are aware of Rosy's infidelity through the village idiot Michael (John Mills) is mute and considered a fool, but Michael is clever enough to steal large uniform and medals, while is in the process of making love with Rosy in a secluded island cave.
Michael adores Rosy but instinctively knows he has no chance. He feels a kinship with Major Doryan, because both suffer from profound limps. Both the soft impact and Shell are the wounds of war Doryan.
Tom Ryan (Leo McKern) is Rosy's father and owner of the local pub. It is a great conversationalist freedom that is taken literally to be a freedom fighter by the rebel leader O'Leary, who leans on him for support in the collection of German weapons that are deposited in the sea and floating on the shore.
Just look at the storm scene, huge waves crashing on the rocky shore while villagers are struggling to recover broken boxes of rifles, bullets and dynamite.
When the rebels seeking to distance off the cache of weapons, they are greeted by British soldiers who have been warned by Tom Ryan. O'Leary is shot by Major Doryan and captured while trying to escape. Assume that it will be hanged for leading the rebellion.
Once exposed, the villagers consider the infidels Rosy the British officer whore "and an informant unfair and dishonest, when in fact it was his father. Ryan, whose wife has died, has spoiled his daughter growing up, and he is the indicator silence for the British who are never exposed, even when he can save his daughter against evil.
The villagers become a mob and eventually beat husband Charles Rosy, Rosy strip naked and cut her beautiful long hair. This is apparently the ultimate disgrace in an Irish village, ostracism and humiliation.
Major Doryan ends on the beach with Michael who has recovered some dynamite. When Doryan realizes his affair with Rosy is over, he uses dynamite to commit suicide.
Rosy husband is aware of her adultery but hopes it will follow its course, and it will be there when it's finished. When he discovers that he is unable to deal with it, he decided to leave Rosy. They know they must leave the village and are led out of town by Father Collins (Trevor Howard), the Catholic priest.
Director David Lean had to wait a year before a storm dramatic enough appeared on the Atlantic Ocean to film the weapons recovery scene. This round. Posted on June 2, 2010.
