Randall Darius Jackson (born June 23, 1956) is an American musician and record producer, now better known to the general public to be a judge on the television show American Idol.
Musical career
Jackson began his musical career playing the electric bass. He played bass in the support group violin virtuoso Jean-Luc Ponty and toured with the rock band Journey in 1983 and 1985. It was a very popular session musician in Los Angeles during the 1980s. His many credits range from playing with Aretha Franklin, George Michael, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Billy Cobham, Blue a–yster Cult, Herbie Hancock, Richard Marx, Billy Joel, Journey, Stryper and Bob Dylan to play at the Grand Ole Opry with Charlie Daniels Band. His production / writing work in the Bay of San Francisco with Narada Michael Walden and Walter Afanasieff led Randy to be in high demand as a producer himself.
While in the Bay Area, Randy played in bands with Carlos Santana and Jerry Garcia. He moved to Italy in the 1980s and produced a record for the Italian star Zucchero pop. The file and Zucchero Randy Jackson Band produced one of Zucchero's biggest hits, "Give". Jackson was the bassist Tracy Chapman featured on several tracks on his business in 1992 out of the heart, he played on the single "Bang Bang Bang," Open Arms "and" Dream a World.
