Which famous jazz musicians you've seen in concert and that was the favorite performance? I saw years Terry Clark several years and he has done and the updated version of "Mumbles'.... that was cool. I saw many other jazz performances over the years, but most were less known musicians.
The first jazz concert I ever attended was one by the Group Buddy Rich, about 27 years. Most concerts I attended were the last dozen years, however. Among those I saw:
Sonny Rollins (always a pleasure to live - if you ever get a chance to visit one of his shows)
Dave Brubeck (it's amazing the energy he has always staged at his age - again, if you ever get the chance, go!)
McCoy Tyner (solo and management groups)
Oscar Peterson (after his stroke, but he was still capable of playing damn good)
Ray Brown (I've seen several times because his group was still fun - it does what number one, where he had the audience snapping fingers to keep time while he was a bass solo, then I can say that I "played" with Ray Brown!)
Junior Mance
Smith Jimmy (disappointing)
Dr. Lonnie Smith
Joey DeFrancesco
Papa John DeFrancesco
Jimmy McGriff, Hank Crawford & Jimmy Scott (all together, a really great show)
Joe Williams
Bob Dorough and Dave Frishberg (all)
Louie Bellson (What a drummer and a very nice guy too!)
Clark Terry (yes, a great artist - he did a song where he played trumpet in one hand and the other in flugelhorn, and then he played trumpet in the operation in reverse!)
Tito Puente (a great showman who has always led a very tight)
John Handy
Art Farmer and Frank Morgan (set)
Hargrove
Stanley Turrentine (I saw him play a few days before his death)
Bobby Hutcherson
Milt Jackson
Stefon Harris
Kenny Garrett (must see him live to understand how it really is)
Hugh Masekela (a dynamic artist)
Abdullah Ibrahim
Gene Harris (he assured his audience amused - I really miss)
Billy Higgins (a joy to watch - one of my favorite drummers)
Mose Allison
Bud Shank
Arturo Sandoval
Jimmy, Percy and Tootie Heath
Rosemary Clooney
Dianne Reeves
Tania Maria
Joe Henderson
Brad Mehldau
Jessica Williams
Keith Jarrett (solo and with his trio)
Lou Rawls
Kurt Elling
Peggy Lee
Hank Jones
Elvin Jones
Joshua Redman
Joe Lovano
Toshiko Akiyoshi and Lew Tabackin (together and separately Tabackin)
Chico O'Farrill
Chucho Valdes (one of the greatest pianists of the world which should be much better known)
Frank Wess
Mulgrew Miller
McPartland
Kenny Barron and Regina Carter (together)
Harold Mabern
Mark Murphy
Richie Cole
Steve Turre
Manhattan Transfer
Dick Hyman
Randy Brecker
David "Fathead" Newman
Ray Charles (saw him twice and it was great each time)
Dave Holland
Phil Woods
Nicholas Payton
Preservation Hall Jazz Band (their music is something very good)
Dr. John
Chuck Mangione
Carla Bley and Steve Swallow (all)
Corea
James Moody
Harry "Sweets" Edison
Lou Donaldson
George Shearing
There are probably other "big" names I forget now. So many lesser known artists who were, however well worth seeing, such as Taylor Eigsti, Joanne Brackeen, Karrin Allyson, Barbara Dennerlein, Jason Moran, Pete Christleib, Dorothy Donegan, Roberta Gambarini, and Virginia Mayhew.
My favorite concerts were probably those given by Rollins and Brubeck. I have seen each one several times and it has always been up.
