The happy ending is a film in 1969, which tells the story of a repressed housewife who longs for liberation of his marriage. It stars Jean Simmons (who received an Oscar nomination), John Forsythe, Shirley Jones, Lloyd Bridges, Teresa Wright.
1953 - and by the fall and winter of Colorado, Mary Spencer (Simmons), and Fred Wilson (Forsythe), lead an idyllic existence. Mary College ends prematurely to marry Fred, and their mirrors perfect marriage of the happy ending of the film Mary loves.
1969 - a suburban home in Denver, Colorado. It is the anniversary of the marriage of Wilson 16. On her way to work Fred, a successful tax consultant, said their daughter (Nanette Fabray) Agnes, he found a bit of vodka hidden in a wardrobe of Mary and asked her to keep an eye on his wife. Agnes Mary went to see the beauty salon. In an airline desk, but Mary bought a one way ticket to Nassau, Bahamas. During the flight, she recalls the horrors of the birthday party last year, when Fred was drunk and flirted with a blonde divorcee and she too had been driven out of the bottle and Casablanca, on television. He somehow triggered a brawl with her husband. On one stop, she called to the house where the birthday party years has been another type of disaster. Her daughter (Kathy Fields), is alarmed by the call - he recalls the time she had found her mother unconscious after an overdose.
En route to Nassau, Marie met Flo, (Jones), a former schoolmate, she has not seen since 1953. While Mary settled in married life, Flo was the mistress of a series of married men. It is on the way to Nassau, Bahamas to meet his latest, Sam (Bridges). When Mary told her she had to move away from Fred, Flo promises to take care of her. In Nassau, Mary loves the life of sun and sand and long stretches of empty beach. One evening at the casino, Mary becomes the object of Franco (Bobby Darin), attention. A Hustler Los Angeles who is down on his luck, Franco wrongly assumes the beautiful woman is also a very wealthy woman. With a fake Italian accent he crazy Mary thought he was a journalist who writes about film stars. She agrees to go to "his" boat, but Franco quickly loses interest when it transpires that Mary is not rich, and confesses his trick. Walking in the Ocean Mary recalls the occasion of his suicide attempt - she returned to have a facelift to note that Fred was in Reno with a girl. Her daughter, Marge had found and had been transported to the hospital. Released from the hospital had resumed his drinking, she had spent large sums of money ill, and crashed his car while drunk.
Now, Nassau, Sam asks Flo to marry her, and she accepts. Mary flies home. Agnes met her and help her move into the halls, she hired away from Fred and Marge. She takes a job and enrolled in night classes at the University. This is where Fred found him one evening. "What?" asks. "All our friends are married, and they are happy."
