IMDb profile
Norma Desmond is a main character in Billy Wilder's film Sunset Boulevard.
An aging former star of silent films, Desmond (Gloria Swanson) stripped his Gothic mansion in Beverly Hills, off Sunset Boulevard, nursing dreams of a return to stardom, while her grip on reality becomes increasingly tenuous over the years. His only companion is Max (Erich von Stroheim), her butler, former director and we learn later, her first husband, who serves as protector and shield from the outside world. Because he is still in love with her, he says it is still a star, and the cutting of the new media to prevent realize it was completely forgotten by the public darling.
One day, Joe Gillis (William Holden), a young unemployed screenwriter Desmond arrives with a flat tire on his 1946 Plymouth after being chased by two men on board. He parks the car in the garage of the hotel and is convened by NORMA at the door. She confused for a funeral for his pet chimp just died.
Norma learned that Joe Gillis is actually a writer and asked him to throw added to a manuscript, she worked for a while. This is the story of Salome, and she plans to star, if she is way past his first.
Joe quickly realized the opportunity to milk money from the star delusional, he promises to fix her a script for a star vehicle, and Norma agreed as she wants to send the script to Paramount Pictures, acclaimed director Cecil B. DeMille, with whom Desmond worked. Desmond is delighted, she sees Gillis the opportunity to reunite his promise of youth, and puts her up in style, buying clothes and paying all his expenses. Max appears from Gillis immediately, but puts up with the comedy, because it is his beloved "Madame" happy. Over time, however, Desmond becomes increasingly unstable when it becomes clear that there was not a hit movie in the works, and more and more jealous and depend Gillis. She confesses her love for him at a New Year's Eve party, but he rejects her and leaves.
He attends another party, where he first flirted with writer Betty (Nancy Olson), and plans to leave the house of Norma. Norma made a suicide attempt, and when Joe returns to comfort her, she seduces him.
Meanwhile, Paramount repeatedly calls for Norma. She believes DeMille wants to produce her script. In reality, Paramount just wants to use his vintage cars in a movie. While Norma visits DeMille on the plateau, Max learns that the calls were on the car. He said Gillis, but hides this Norma. DeMille himself takes pity on her and told him what she wants to hear.
Gillis began writing a screenplay with Betty in secrecy, and Betty tells him she fell in love with him. When he heard Norma have a telephone conversation with Betty, in an attempt to scare him away, he invited Betty to the house and confesses the situation euphemistically "an older woman who has much to do" and a "young man who is not too good. "
After hunting Betty Gillis said Norma, he leaves for good. Desmond snaps and shoo.
