Marketplace | Michael Clarke Duncan Film Review: Island One thing you can say about her director Michael Bay that he knows how to blow things. Lets forget for a second that he did not do a competent film since his debut film Boys Bad (1995). Since it is more amped up the excess in the film The Rock (1996) Pearl Harbor (2001) Bad Boys II (2003). On the island, it actually fits the story and even if it goes a little over board in the third act, the excesses of the bay to complete the story perfectly. I will not bore you with details of the plot other than it's Logan's Run for modern times.
What is important to note is that the Hunting sequences too long and exaggerated explosions fit the impending film about two people being driven from the city. Writer Caspian Tredwell-Owen, Alex Kutzman and Robert Orci do a good job with balancing the action with the demands of history and there are even some very exciting sequences that do not seem forced in the history (as Bad Boys II and Armageddon 1998 feel). Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson are perfect together and there's even the casting inspiration Sean Bean as the villain of the film is good, but be aware that the means do not justify the ends. While Djimon Hounsou, Steve Buscemi and Michael Clarke Duncan are welcomed supporting roles, there are few contributions between the two.
I'm not a fan of the bay, but I think its excesses as a filmmaker actually help the film more than most of his other films and I think this film is actually consistent with respect his other films.
