Marketplace | Mary Martin Book Review: A test of one by Mary E. Martin An author who undertakes to write a trilogy, is the least ambitious, to maintain key characters over three books requires some very complex plot manipulations. Mary Martin has succeeded in grand style. A test of the trilogy ends Osgoode cut off. In the book we meet our intrepid, but unlikely hero Harry Jenkins, a very average lawyer, practicing in a law firm very small and very ordinary. When his partner dies suddenly he finds himself captain of the ship, but where is the ship headed? He is now alone to make work.
Book last two Paradox continues the saga of Harry, he discovers a huge fraud was perpetrated years before, millions of dollars have disappeared into a scam of medical research, and its old customer Norma Dinnick showing signs that reveal a confusion dementia Harry . Is she a victim of fraud, or a partner in crime?
In a trial of one of those mysteries, and mix skillfully executed and several twists, all gradually come together. Our hero, Harry finds himself once again caught in the needs of its customers. Norma Dinnick has been incarcerated in a mental institution after being found not guilty by reason of insanity in the onset of Alzheimer's disease and killed. In his travels in rare lucidity, she speaks of an immense fortune, which rightly belongs to her. Harry acts not only as his lawyer, but also the legal guardian feels obliged to investigate. The capital itself seems real, but is ill-gotten gains from fraud, or money that has been justly earned? A fictitious company called Elixacorp raised over 30 million dollars, but where is the money now?
Although all the original actors in the fraud scheme are dead, there is a man who still has an interest in driving the booty, Dr. Robert Hawke. Is medical technology, or mad maniac? That is the question we face. It does not take long to realize that Mr. Harry Hawke is a dangerous opponent. Mr. Hawke is researching a new drug that can treat and even reverse the ravages of Alzheimer's disease. This could be the most important breakthrough in medical science for many years. Research takes money well, and Dr Hawke argues that the money Harry Jenkins has been legally raised looking, and was specifically for research on Alzheimer's disease. Harry Jenkins must also deal with the distraught widow of his dead partner. Dorothy Crawford is convinced that her husband Richard was poisoned, and deadly diseases, was simply the result. And the murderer is someone know only by the initial "Q."
A test is a cracking read, call a page turner does not do justice. What I really appreciated even through it is part of a trilogy it stands on its own. You do not need to have read the previous books to understand the plot or the characters involved. The characters are well developed and rich in texture.
The story moves from Toronto to Vienna, London, each step becomes more dangerous for Harry.
It is an interesting book and operates on several levels. This is not your standard action / adventure by any stretch of imagination. One of the subplots involves sex, well actually not quite true, it is about sexuality, and it is certainly food for thought.
Maybe a trilogy is the ideal number of pounds of work a character, and then move on. Even famous best selling authors have fallen into the trap of wearing a character, an example is the author Tom Clancy who worked his character Jack Ryan until it becomes a joke. Mary Martin has not, in fact, I'm sure she could use it two or three times. Certainly, if I were, I'd be a serious consideration for him.
It is a great book, and you can get your own copy of the Amazon, there is also an interesting web page, the Osgoode Trilogy, the support of the trilogy. Posted on June 3, 2010.
