Marcos PauloA discussion of culture and translation in the play The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams

There are several aspects involved in the process of writing a book. Contrary to what some people may think of such a trade, it is not simply the easiest way and accessible to express our feelings. Instead, it requires hard work and a lot of thoughts that come from our personal and collective experiences. Thus, it is possible to affirm that all the contents in the literature is the result of a discussion with the art of making use of reality through his own influences, namely, the cultural background of the author - habits, beliefs, language and lifestyle. For this reason, we can always read a book in North America, and unlike other distinct ways of writing. Therefore, the main objective of this essay is to discuss the adaptation of The Glass Menagerie (O Zoola³gico de Vidro), Tennessee Williams, in Portuguese, with special responsibility for the actresses playing the characters Amanda and Laura Wingfield. What cultural differences that we see between the North American and Brazilian versions of The Glass Menagerie? Where do these differences come from? However, before discussing these questions, I will present some definitions of culture, intercultural and translation to support my point of view follows.

According Dereta (1980), culture is everything that humans have created, discovered, manufactured, processed and prepared in the course of time. In this way, culture could be defined as "a body of knowledge, beliefs, artistic and moral principles, laws, habits and skills acquired by humans as members of a social order" (Demo, 1987, p. 61). Through Banks and McGee (1989), culture does not refer to objects, tools, or other cultural elements, but how members of a specified group interpret, use and perceive them. In turn, Albo (2005) defines culture as a concept related to identity. That way, he said people tend to perceive themselves as part of a group because they have characteristics in common with other members and also the differences they grow compared to others. In addition, after recalling some definitions of culture, Gomes (2008) displays his anthropological concept . According to his words, culture is how people act in society, which gives the sense of a coherent system of thinking to do before the absolute position, and, finally, we reproduce. As last example, later than expose one of the first notions of culture proposed by Edward Burnett Tylor, Laraia (2004) warns us, saying that every cultural system is always subject to change. As if, understanding This dynamic is important to reduce conflicts between different generations and avoid stigmatized behaviors. "Likewise, it is crucial to understand the differences between people of different cultures, it is necessary to understand the differences occurring in a separate system "(Laraia, 2008, p. 101).

With regard to all these considerations on culture, we can think of questions: Is it possible to interact with the difference? Two different groups of men speaking to one another and contribute to the improvement of the other? It is, as some researchers have argued, refers to the process of interculturalism. But what does this mean? In agreement with Alba³ (2005), intercultural occurs between social groups and people from different cultures. In addition, the author shows the difference between negative and positive intercultural contact. The first has to pass when there is a kind of destruction of what is culturally divergent - that is, when the interaction of the causes of its reduction or assimilation. On the other hand, the second type of intercultural contact that happens when he starts to respect each other.
