1. Introduction and Background

Located on the east side of the Hudson River in Dutchess County about 100 miles north of Manhattan, Rhinebeck, accessible from the Taconic State Parkway, Route 9, Route 9W and the New York State Thruway, is both picturesque and historic village intensely. It is itself part of the Hudson River Valley National Historic Area was created in 1996 by Congress to recognize, preserve, protect and interpret the nationally significant history and resources of the valley for the benefit of nation, and extends from Yonkers to Albany.

Signature and mainstay of the village is the Beekman Arms, the oldest in America, continually operating inn inscribed in the National Register of Historic Places. Tracing its origins to 1766 when Arent Traphagen moved with his father's success Bogardos structure of stone and solid wood - so constructed to protect against attacks from Indians - at the crossroads of the village recently designated Ryn Beck, she ultimately served the Mecca of the revolutionary, often hosting the likes of George Washington, Benedict Arnold and Alexander Hamilton.
