Ken WatanabeMovie Review: Letters from Iwo Jima

After watching the mediocre FLAGS of our fathers, I do not expect much from this film may be because last year the producer / director Clint Eastwood has made some of his best work ever (Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby) and he was bound to have a little less satisfying film on the horizon. Letters from Iwo Jima is not this film, in fact, it is one of the best films of Eastwood.
Lead by General Kuribayashi (Ken Watanabe), he and his men set up a planned attack on American soldiers during the battle that took place central Iwo Jima during World War II. Iwo Jima is not just strategic battlefield, but a place of spiritual honor to the Japanese soldiers who would rather die, then to abandon their island for the Americans. Thematically-wise the film is related to flags of our fathers, soldiers had to question their place in war and what war does to the psyche of a soldier. And like the first film of this film explores all the possibilities by comparing and contrasting the motives and actions of soldiers against themselves as a group and that of their superior officers. This film goes further by also giving the impression that Japanese soldiers to American soldiers what they said American soldiers are similar, that are wild (though contrasted through several Japanese soldiers to meet with American soldiers ).
The only thing a lot about viewing a movie Eastwood is the absence of an authoritarian style film that can power the history of film itself (John Woo, Terrance Malick, Oliver Stone). It simply lets the story unfold in its time, in its way, leading to a more satisfying experience and emotional display.
As flags, LETTERS does not give a good picture of the war or its effects on people and cultures he would do and still affects. It is an uncompromising glimpse into the evil that is war and once we open our eyes to its true nature, we will never be able to close them.
