Does anyone know why Jean-Michel Basquiat paintings were so popular?

I do not think it is his paintings as well as himself as an artist. Watch the film, Basquiat, and you'll probably have some appreciation for his work. It was something new and discovered by the elite, but he was not rich, he was almost homeless, but an individual artist and motivated.
