After the 1978-79 season, four teams WHA, including the Alberta Oilers (later the Edmonton Oilers), joined the National Hockey League. The other three teams were the WHA Quebec Nordiques, Winnipeg Jets and Hartford Whalers. In his first NHL season, 1979-80, Gretzky won the Hart Trophy as MVP of the league (the first of eight in a row) and tied for leading scorer with Marcel Dionne with 137 points (Dionne won the Art Ross Memorial Trophy as top scorer in the league because he had scored more goals, while Gretzky has played fewer games). Gretzky was not eligible for the Calder Trophy, given to the best rookie in the NHL because of his previous years of professional experience. The rule, however, was amended some years later. In his second season, Gretzky won the Art Ross (the first of seven consecutive years) with a record 164 points in a season, and won his second Hart Trophy. The Oilers have a young team, with strong forwards Mark Messier, Glenn Anderson and Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey defender, and goalie Grant Fuhr, and Gretzky as its captain. In 1983, they made the Stanley Cup than to be swept by the three-champion New York Islanders. The following season, the Oilers met the Islanders in the final, this time to win their first Stanley Cup in four over the next five years.
