Haila Stoddard (1913 -)
Brief biography
Haila Stoddard is known for his work as an actor, producer, screenwriter and director. Born in Great Falls, Montana Stoddard moved to Los Angeles, California, where she graduated from the University of Southern California. In 1934, Stoddard made his first appearance on stage at the Belasco, Los Angeles, in the play Merrily We Roll Along. During his career as an actress Stoddard appeared in a number of plays, films and television series, including sixteen years Rysdale Pauline in "The Secret Storm (1954-1970). Stoddard career took him across the United States and has lasted genres (including comedy, drama, magazine, and the novel).
Stoddard has also worked as a producer, both independently and with his production company, Bonard Productions Incorporated, Stoddard created with Helen Bonfils in 1960. In addition to adapting pieces like come play with me and men, women, and less alarming creatures, Stoddard also wrote plays like a circle with Ring (1969) and Zellerman, Arthur (1979).
In 1938, Jack Kirkland Stoddard married to whom she had two children. The couple divorced in 1947 and the following year married Harold Bromley Stoddard with whom she had a child. After divorcing Bromley in 1954, Whitfield Connor Stoddard married in 1956 with whom she remained married for thirty-two years, until his death in 1988.
Career
For three decades, a perennial star on stage in New York and television, Haila Stoddard was the first to introduce the work of James Thurber and Harold Pinter on Broadway. New York Times drama critic Brooks Atkinson called her 1960 adaptation of Thurber Carnival, it shows the freshest and funniest of the year. The concept called for three turntables back of the stage for scene changes instantly, and a jazz quartet traveling through the sketch on a conveyor belt scene.
Stoddard has produced the Tony Award winning musical, his first Broadway production, with the Colorado heiress Helen Bonfils and Michael Davis. She had befriended Bonfils, while appearing in summer 1953 as the leading lady in Denver Elitch Theater, where Miss Bonfils, owner and publisher of The Denver Post, has played parts of nature in summer stock company. When Thurber granted rights Stoddard theater, Bonfils said Oney, if youe got the rights, youe got the money!
Its original cast of Tom Ewell, Alice Ghostly, Paul Ford, Peggy Cass, John McGiver, Jazz Quartet and Don Elliott, and was directed by Bu.
