Edith Piaf

Edith PiafI love touring Paris - The Twentieth Arrondissement

The 20th arrondissement of Paris Nord is located on the right bank of the Seine. Its area is 2.3 square miles or ribbon of less than six square kilometers. The population is over 104 to 20,000 and the area is home to about fifty-five thousand jobs. The borough has two special districts, and Belleville Menilmontant discussed below, but let's start with the number of the twentieth one tourist attraction, the cemetery of Pa¨re-Lachaise, the largest cemetery in Paris and is frankly one the most famous cemeteries in the world. This slice of Paris attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors per year. Although there are several underground stations serving the Pere Lachaise many tourists prefer the Gambetta station right near the tomb of Oscar Wilde and then descended through more than one way. This property occupies nearly 120 acres (nearly 50 hectares) and includes several war memorials.

This unusual attraction is named for Father Franasois de La Chaise, confessor of Louis XIV, who lived on the property of three hundred years ago. For health reasons cemeteries were being allowed back to Paris in 1786. When Pere Lachaise was created by Napoleon in 1804, he was far from the city. To drum activity remains of La Fontaine and Molia¨re were transferred in the same year. Then in 1817 the remains of the famous couple supposed Abelard and Heloise were buried on the property. In recent years, its population grew from several dozen to more than thirty thousand. Today, more than three hundred thousand were buried without counting those who have been cremated. The notables buried here are the French writer Honore de Balzac, French actress Sarah Bernhardt, the Polish composer Frederic Chopin, Isadora Duncan, American dancer, singer and songwriter Jim Morrison whose grave has a security guard time full, perhaps the French resistance leader Jean Moulin, the French singer Edith Piaf, and the Irish writer Oscar Wilde.

The 'Wall (Wall Communards ") is also located in the cemetery of Pere-Lachaise. This marks the spot where 147 Communards, the last ditch defenders working class district of Belleville, were killed in May 1871 marking the effective end of the Paris Commune. The cemetery and the wall are particularly short of sanctuary for the French left and several of their leaders are buried in the neighborhood.

Belleville meaning beautiful city is a Parisian working-class districts located primarily in 20 and 19 with some overflow in the 10th and 11th. There was once an independent village and stands in the fight for the Second Republic in 1848 and the Paris Commune of 1870 to 1871. That is a picturesque and home to a large Chinese community. Tuesdays and Fridays, you will find local farmers selling their goods in an outdoor market on Boulevard de Belleville. Many artists live and work now in this district. According to popular legend the incomparable singer Edith Piaf was born under a street light in Belleville. This part of Paris has been featured in numerous films including the 1951 Golden Helmet (Gold Cap), Triplets of Belleville in 2003, and 2007 biography of Piaf, La Vie en Rose (Life through rose-colored glasses), the name of one of his signature songs.

Of course, you do not want to tour Paris without sampling end of French wine and Food. Let me suggest a sample menu: You can start with escargots de Bourgogne (snails in parsley butter). For your second course enjoy fondue (meat fondue). For dessert, treat yourself to wine poached pears in Burgundy (pears poached in Burgundy wine). Your Parisian sommelier (wine steward) will be happy to suggest appropriate wines to accompany each dish.
