DrakeThe new book by Richard Drake terrorism expert to examine how the ideology of terror is rooted in society

Richard R. Drake, Ph.D.

Terrorism expert Professor Department of History UM

By Brian D'Ambrosio

To call a historian Richard Drake Sterling analytical and popular intellectual figure, while many true, just pay the proper respect. Drake, the author of many internationally renowned books and articles on Italian history, began teaching at the University of Montana in 1982. Highly respected by his students, fully respected by his colleagues, he has matured into one of the jewels of the university academic, and its course: Terrorism: political violence in the modern world is usually one of the largest facilities on campus.

Unwise to make generalizations about transparent, terrorism is largely a matter complicated and complex, with acts and deeds of separate categories and subcategories such as state terrorism, terrorism individual state terrorism perpetrated against foreign population and individual or group terrorism committed against the state. Drake, voted the Most Inspirational Teacher by graduating seniors in 1991 and winner of the UM Distinguished Scholar in 1996, introduces his students to rise and promotion of terrorism in the modern world, starting with episodes terrorists at the time of the French Revolution and ending with contemporary events. He admits that running against terrorism can be difficult to teach because it stimulates both disparate ideological, religious and ethnic passions. The dilemmas and emotions aside, the classroom is not the place for political indoctrination or manipulation, Drake said: "I'm going to my students and explain as clearly as I can the two parties. Or how many sides there are. And I try to be fair and critical to all different parts of an argument, describing such discussions fully and completely, then let them know where I think the preponderance of the evidence is located. "

Different types of terrorist challenges justify the different types of solutions, "said Drake. If satisfied that the military option is a valid response to certain circumstances, once a terrorist organization establishes strong ties within a community or country, provide important support and a friendly basis, as is the case, he believes in the Shiite and Sunni Muslim communities in Iraq today, a military solution will never be victorious. "Once the military response fails, a political, social or economic needs to be added to the equation. If group support is negligible, then you can send the Marines to cauterize ... if serious support exists then it is time to consider a much more varied. Sometimes a political compromise can remove such support. "

Clearance terrorists does not eliminate the problem or the widespread support that these groups attract, "said Drake, who said that invading Iraq was an ill and unable to respond to these horrific attacks of September 11, 2001" Richard Clarke (National Security Advisor to four U.S. presidents, including George W. Bush) has most eloquently in his book Against All Enemies, when he described terrorism as something that has metastasized throughout the world Islamic fundamentalism as a direct consequence of this invasion. We really need to revise our strategy in this country or we have to sink deeper and deeper into a quagmire of violence. I think we are doing the right thing based on my knowledge of history. "

"To spend our military resources away from Afghanistan and make our military budget in Iraq, a country that attacks us, it is singularly the most unintelligent thing the president could have done. Now we have billions and billion out of a hemorrhage. No.
