Why so many people think Carter was a great president? I recently asked a question about what people have thought that the first 5 presidents of the 20th Century. Several responses, including Carter in their list. Why?
As president, I know of only one performance, that being the Camp David. In all others, it has been a dismal failure as president. Domestically under Carter we had double digit inflation, high unemployment, high gas prices and gas shortages because of wages and prices, a weak economy, and general malaise as it was called then, that the best days of America were behind it. He made the decision not to process spent nuclear fuel, causing thousands of tons of additional waste.
Internationally, Carter abandoned the Shah of Iran, causing the support of the mullahs and the holding of our embassy people hostage hundreds of days. The repercussions continue to this day.
After his presidency, he has an excellent record as a statesman and humanitarian, but his presidency was the worst.
I think Carter was an honest man, intelligent, who has on his head as president. I do not agree with your interpretation about the Shah.
I just wish people had listened with respect our need to diversify our energy supply.
He got Egypt and Israel for a treaty that has lasted to this day. Remember, Egypt was the main enemy of Israel in 1956, 1967 and 1973 wars. He signed the SALT II disarmament treaty, which paved the way for future negotiations with Reagan Gorbachev. He began a program of energy conservation and alternative fuels program to wean the U.S. off its dependence on oil from the Middle East (interrupted by Reagan, unfortunately).
because he did not give in to terrorism, like Reagan! If you forget the Iran / cons! and inflation, high unemployment and gas prices was driven by a war against terrorism [Vietnam from communism] you know what country that attacks us [like Iraq]! that caused the deficit to rise so high that it crippled our economy !.... I'm so happy story does not repeat itself! ] Taunts [
I do not know
Good question
It does not matter who the president is that nobody likes them for long
It has only been elected for a term. He was horrible in economic policies, resulting in double-digit inflation and double digit unemployment, he also let go of the military to shit. He was also surrounded by idiots.
Thank you. Very do-nothing you.
Is this a question or a chance for you to use your forum?
I think he was more honest ... I guess honesty does not pay!
Even if not worse, but it ranks in the bottom half I'm sure.
Because Carter is partly responsible for ending the Cold War. It was his idea to use a proxy war against the Soviet Union into Afghanistan, and then drain the USSR did not end the war she could not afford.
Funny how history often fails to mention.
Well, they all look good compared to what we have now!
It beats me. The man led to shortages of gasoline. He allowed the Iranian hostage situation. He raised taxes. I do not think he did something. The problem is that people like to call "top five" because of their feelings, not facts.
Selective memory.
I am sure he is in favor of origin. I remember the Carter administration and it was the worst four years, I can remember the country. Sky high unemployment, inflation and interest rates. Attempts to control prices which huge shortage of gasoline and rationing of this product.
I could not agree more. Except for your last statement. Helping to build a few houses do not compensate for being a traitor to our country by U.S. gossip enemy and the non-support.
Jimmy Carter was and is my favorite president. I loved him because of his honesty. My husband is retired.
