Bennett CerfHuxley Blunder

Dr. William Horatio Bates died in 1931, but his wild theories are always with us. Among other things, he mistakenly believed that eye exercises can correct vision problems and people could do without glasses.

His theories are reflected in his controversial book was reissued in 1940 as a "best view without glasses." He remains in print today. Although some errors Bates were removed in subsequent editions, much of this book is that the wife is nonsense and has long been discredited by doctors.

"Take your glasses! became the rallying cry of an international movement in the 30s and 40s. Thousands of people sincerely believed that Bates exercises had healed. Unfortunately, medical testing does not support this idea, "said Alan MacRobert" not necessarily the New Age. "

One of the strongest supporters for Bates was the British novelist Aldous Huxley. Huxley claimed his sight was restored by Mrs. Margaret Corbett Dorst which operated two schools that taught the Bates system. He even wrote a book titled "The Art of Seeing," which praised the method. But Huxley later proved to be a source of embarrassment.

At a banquet in Hollywood where he was the guest speaker, Huxley initially surprised the 1,200 guests that evening, when he began to read his speech. Many of them knew Huxley scored corneas from childhood which accounted for his failing eyesight. How did he read his speech without glasses? Was it proof that the system worked Bates?

Like Huxley, however, it became clear he was not reading at all: he had memorized his speech. At one point, he missed a line and looked at the paper he held. Then the truth came out.

To refresh his memory, he brought the paper closer to his eyes. When he was only an inch or so away he still can not read and had to angle the glass in his pocket. It was a painful moment, "he told Bennett Cerf at April 12, 1952 edition of" Saturday Review.

In 1956, flaws in the system of Bates were exposed once again by Dr. Philip Pollack in Manhattan optometrist "The truth about the eye exercises." Alas, Pollack's book was quickly forgotten, but the system lives on Bates.

"It is difficult to understand the great popularity of the Bates system, unless it considers that its followers comprise what is essentially a cult. Its practitioners are healers who use the gullible, the neurotic, the emotional and psychosomatics. "Viewed without glasses perfect" is an empty promise, "concluded Mr. Russell S. Worrall and Jacob Nevi in" The Brigands of health. "
