Marketplace | Ben Vereen Jewel of the Seas - That's Entertainment One of the things that tend to stick in the minds of cruisers is the entertainment on board. Gone are the days of artists of the second order and the same old shows. Today, many efforts are made to the organization of entertainment on board cruise ships and the show could well be stars of the future. Who remembers Jane McDonald appearing on the documentary The Cruise? In addition, Claire Sweeney, who appeared in Brookside, began his career singing on cruise ships. You might also be seduced by stars from the past and present - I was pleased to see that Kelly Monteith (the U.S. equivalent of Dave Allen) is booming and one can see on some Royal Caribbean cruises.
Inspired by my recent trip to see Royal Caribbean Jewel of the Seas, I decided to learn more about the entertainment on board after hearing so much about it. Royal Caribbean is proud of its entertainment program. You could be forgiven for thinking you're actually in the West End, rather than in the theater coral aboard Jewel of the Seas. Shows include "from the west end of Broadway" with musical numbers from Cole Porter to Les Miserables, "City of Dreams" with music from artists like Elton John and Celine Dion, and "Tango Buenos Aires", with dancers and Argentinian musicians. The shows are set twice a night to match the two sessions dinner, so you never miss, and are not repeated during the campaign - just the thing for theatergoers.
In addition to being packed in the theater Reef aboard Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas, you can take part in many activities throughout the day, including lessons from game (ideal for trying to make a fortune in the casino) games, and piano lessons.
I went backstage to ask Bobby Brown, director of cruise on the Jewel of the Seas, a few questions about entertainment aboard ship. Born in Scotland, Bobby began his entertainment career very young at 5 years, participating in competitive ballroom dancing around the world. In 1998 he moved to London where he met his wife and together they participated professionally in ballroom dancing, reaching the rank of 19th in the world (a dancer to come on Strictly Come Dancing may be). Bobby began working in the cruise industry when he joined Sun Line Cruises in 1993 before moving to Royal Caribbean in 1995.
How long have you been in charge of entertainment on Jewel of the Seas?
Since November 2006, but I have been with Royal Caribbean International since 1995, when I started as a cruise on the activities of staff Legend of the Seas. I served on Legend of the Seas, Majesty of the Seas, Rhapsody of the Seas, Vision of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas and Jewel of the Seas.
