Rest of God There is a wonderful story of a man lying on a raft in the water. A rich man shouted from the dock to him, "What are you doing? You have to work."
The man on the raft replies: "So, what should I do?"
From the pier the man said: "So you could make more money."
Again the man on the raft asked: "So, what should I do?"
The rich man replied: "Well, you could save enough money to buy a bigger boat and put people to work for you."
Puzzled, the man in the raft asks: "So, what should I do?"
With more intensity and a bit irritated by the man on the platform said: "So you could make more money and then buy more boats and to put more men to work for you."
Once more the quiet man floating in the water issues: "So, what should I do?"
"Then you could have a whole fleet of ships and employees who work on your behalf and if you stay with it long enough, you will become very rich."
"So what do I do?" came the expected answer.
Amazed the rich businessman replied: "So you can relax!
For the man in the boat said, "What do you think I do now?"
History is a great picture of the ease with which we can get out of touch with the rhythms of life. We can so caught up in the pursuit of something external that we forget to slow down and enjoy the life that was given. In short, sometimes the ends are not worth the means.
I'm all about working hard and pinching goals and dreams, but at the same time aware of sage advice shared a speaker at a conference when he said: "For some of you the most spiritual thing you should do is to take a nap. "
Mark Buchanan share a story of grandmother of his wife during the gold rush in British Columbia. One day she was polishing a stone when she noticed a bit of gold dust in his hand. She began to polish stone more difficult, and of course more gold dust appeared.
Caught in the tide of the moment she began to put all his energy into the stone before suddenly realize the gold dust came from his alliance, which has now been almost completely sanded off.
Is this sound familiar story? Have we not all been in a hurry too many times, without realizing we were sanding off our alliances? As Joyce Meyer says to someone who asked why things went so poorly answered, "because the devil is real and because he is evil!" As Carl Jung so eloquently said, "Hurry is not the devil, the devil is in a hurry. "
Buchanan from a friend who was confused because he was sure that God was trying to draw attention to something. Buchanan replied: "Maybe that's the problem: you think he wants your attention so that you can do something. Maybe he just wants your attention."
